升卧式闸门平时直立在河道中，像一堵墙挡住水流。当需要放水或通航时，它会垂直向上提升到一定高度，接着顶部向一侧翻转倒下，最终平躺在水面或支撑结构上，腾出空间让水流或船只通过，多用于水利工程之中。
南水北调工程的升卧式闸门在长期的启闭过程中，由于上下部同时过水，水流不仅容易打漩儿，还会导致金属部件长期泡在水里，增加维护成本。
中国南水北调集团渤海公司的工程师团队给常规升卧式闸门，在传统设计的基础上增加“前倾变身”技能。新型前倾的升卧式闸门启动时，先像电梯般垂直上升，待脱离水面后开始仰身后翻，边升高边向上游转身，最终舒展地平躺在闸墩顶部。这套行云流水的动作让水流规规矩矩排队通过，再也不会发生“抢道”现象。

由于运动轨迹更科学，新闸门在启闭过程中全程下部过水，规避了传统卧式闸门同时过水造成的水流紊乱问题。更妙的是，关键活动部件都躲开了水面，既不用频繁涂抹防锈层，润滑系统也搬到了干燥区域，大大降低设备的腐蚀程度。维护人员不仅少跑腿，还彻底隔绝了润滑油接触水面的可能，环保指数直线上升。在闸门开闭过程中，闸门表面的水流快速从闸门两侧排出，减少通航等待时间，提高通航效率。
