《何陋轩记》的作者王阳明（1472—1529），是明代思想家、书法家兼军事家，心学集大成者。

1506年，他因弹劾宦官刘瑾遭廷杖四十，被贬谪至贵州龙场（今修文县）任驿丞。当时的龙场是苗族、仡佬族聚居的偏远之地，被中原视为“蛮荒”。
当地民众见王阳明栖身的石洞阴湿艰苦，主动伐木为他搭建屋舍。

王阳明在屋前种竹栽花，置琴书史籍，将此居命名为“何陋轩”，致敬孔子“君子居之，何陋之有”的精神境界，并创作了《何陋轩记》。

文章犀利对比夷夏文化：指出夷民虽无中原礼乐，但“直情率遂”，淳朴如“未琢之璞”；反而批判中原士人“狡匿谲诈，外良中螫”，揭示其虚伪本质。
文中颠覆了传统视夷狄为“禽兽之域”的偏见，盛赞边民保有“黄帝尧舜之世”的浑朴天性，以心学智慧批判了以礼仪形式判定文明高下的狭隘观念。
